Panelvit® Mustad Screw: Technical Guide to the Universal Wood Screw
The Panelvit® Mustad screw is the universal solution for professional fastening applications in solid wood, chipboard, MDF, OSB, laminates and other wood-derived panels. It has been developed by integrating tip geometry, thread profile, recess, heat treatment, lubrication and finish, because fastening quality depends on the overall performance of the screw rather than on a single detail.
Depending on the selected type, Panelvit® can also be used with nylon plugs, plastic materials, hardware components and thin metal sheet.
This variety makes it possible to identify the most suitable screw for each application, while maintaining the advantages that characterize the Panelvit® range: reliable initial grip, smooth driving, reduced screwing effort, and excellent engagement between recess and bit.
Ogive Point: Immediate Grip and Gradual Penetration

The ogive point is threaded all the way to the tip. The screw therefore starts working from the very first turns, quickly grips the material and limits slipping during initial engagement. Its gradual penetration, without abrupt transitions, reduces the material stress that can cause cracking, swelling or splitting.
The advantage is particularly evident in laminated panels, dense woods and fastenings close to edges. The ogive point allows screwdriving without pre-drilling; however, the diameter, length, distance from the edge and material characteristics must still be appropriate for the specific application.

The ogive point grips the material immediately and provides gradual penetration.
Smooth, Sharp Thread: Fast Driving and Reduced Stress
The Panelvit® screw thread is designed to advance cleanly through wood. Its smooth, sharp profile cuts the fibers rather than excessively compressing them, reducing internal stresses in the material. This is important both in solid wood and in composite wood panels. Chipboard, MDF, OSB and laminates have different structures and require a screw capable of creating a secure grip without causing swelling, chipping or surface breakage.
An effective thread reduces the effort required from the tool, improves screwing continuity and provides more consistent fastening. The screw advances with less resistance, resulting in a cleaner and more secure fastening. In panel processing, furniture production and technical fastening applications, thread quality has a direct impact on the result. For this reason, Panelvit® is designed with a geometry intended to combine fast installation with reliable holding performance.
Lubex®: Mustad’s Anti-Friction Treatment
Lubex® is one of the distinctive features of Mustad Panelvit® screw. It is a Mustad-formulated anti-friction treatment, applied uniformly to the screw to reduce friction during screwdriving.
Driving torque can be reduced by up to 50% compared with a standard unlubricated screw, resulting in lower loads on the screwdriver, reduced battery consumption and less wear on bits.
Lubex® is also effective when screwdriving is stopped and restarted or during removal. In these situations, friction can generate torque peaks that may approach the screw’s breaking limit. Lubex® helps contain these peaks, protecting the screw and making tool operation more consistent.

The comparison shows the reduction in driving torque achieved with Lubex®.
Casehardening and Quenching: Hard Surface and Tough Core
The carbon-steel Panelvit® are subjected to casehardening heat treatment and quenching. Casehardening enriches the surface layer with carbon; the subsequent controlled cooling allows to produce differentiated mechanical properties between the surface and the core.
The outer surface reaches the hardness required to cut through fibers, form the thread in the material and withstand the stresses generated by screwing. The core, on the other hand, retains toughness, which is essential to maintain torsion, shear and bending resistance without becoming brittle.
This balance is particularly important in wood, a material subject to movement and dimensional changes caused by moisture. The screw must penetrate effectively while also absorbing the stresses generated during fastening and throughout the life of the joint.

Casehardening creates a hard surface layer while maintaining a tough screw core.
Panelvit® Finishes: Protection and Aesthetic Integration
The finishing should be selected according to the environment, required durability and aesthetic requirements. Chromiting® and Neroplus® meet different corrosion-protection requirements, while bronze, brass and nickel finishes are primarily intended for aesthetic matching in dry indoor environments.
| Appearance | Finish | Main Applications |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Chromiting® | Chromium VI-free finish. It provides 240 hours of corrosion resistance in salt spray testing and complies with Grade 4 of EN 1670. |
![]() | Neroplus® | Black finish with scratch-resistant sealing. Provides at least 720 hours resistance in salt spray testing and complies with Grade 5 of EN 1670. |
![]() | Bronze-plating | Suitable for dark woods and traditional-style furniture in dry indoor environments. |
![]() | Brass-plating | Suitable for matching brass-coloured handles and accessories in dry indoor environments. |
![]() | Nickel-plating | Designed for nickel-plated hinges and furniture hardware in dry indoor environments. |
For outdoor applications, humid or marine environments and aggressive industrial atmospheres, Panelvit® INOX A2 is available. Austenitic A2 stainless steel, combined with passivation and Lubex® lubrication, provides specific protection against corrosion and rust. INOX versions are not casehardened: their screwing performances derive from the work-hardened material, sharp thread, ogive point and lubrication.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Panelvit® Mustad Screw
What is Panelvit®?
Panelvit® is the Mustad screws range designed for professional fastening applications in wood, chipboard panels, MDF, OSB, laminates and other materials, based on the selected version.
Which materials can the universal Panelvit® be used with?
The universal Panelvit® is suitable for wood, chipboard panels, hardware, nylon plugs, plastic materials and thin metal sheets. The screw diameter, length, head, recess and material must be selected according to the specific application.
What is Lubex® used for?
Lubex® reduces friction during screwdriving and can reduce the required torque by up to 50% compared with an unlubricated screw. It also helps control torque peaks during the stopping, restarting and removing of the screw.
How important are the internal and external hardness levels of a screw?
Internal and external hardness are critical to screw quality. In carbon-steel Panelvit®, the casehardening and quenching process creates a hard surface and a tough core: the outer part must cut through the fibres, form the thread in the material and withstand the stresses generated during screwdriving; the inner part must resist torsion, shear and bending without becoming brittle.
This balance is particularly important in wood, a material subject to movement and dimensional changes caused by moisture. A properly treated screw penetrates effectively and absorbs stresses more effectively during fastening and throughout the fixing.
